Where to go
Panama beach vacation ideas: a 3- to 5-day Pacific Riviera itinerary
For a beach vacation within easy reach of Panama City, the Riviera Pacífica is the classic choice: a string of beach towns along about 40 km of the Pan-American Highway, from Punta Chame and Coronado to San Carlos, Santa Clara and Farallón, roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours from the capital. This 3- to 5-day plan mixes beaches, the mountain town of El Valle de Antón and a private boat day with Strong Tower Adventures from Vista Mar Marina in San Carlos.

Where to base yourself
Coronado: the most developed
The first and busiest beach town on the Riviera, with hotels, restaurants, shops, golf and water sports. Best if you want everything close. Read our Coronado guide.
San Carlos: laid-back, near the marina
More than ten beaches, beginner surf at El Palmar, a calmer sea at La Ensenada and Vista Mar Marina for boat days. Read our San Carlos guide.
Santa Clara and Farallón: the clearer sand
Further west in Coclé province, Santa Clara has lighter sand and clearer water than the darker beaches of Panamá Oeste, with simple palm-roofed beach huts to rent. Farallón beach has public access and small restaurants, and all-inclusive resorts are found around Playa Blanca and nearby.
Punta Chame: for the wind
A peninsula about an hour from the city, best known for kitesurfing from about January to May. Read our Punta Chame guide.
A 3-day Riviera Pacífica itinerary
Day 1: drive out and settle in
Leave Panama City outside peak traffic and head west on the Pan-American Highway. Check in, find a beach with lifeguards, and have fried fish with patacones and ceviche for lunch. If you arrive early enough, end the day on the Sunset Cruise from Vista Mar Marina, about three hours at sea.
Day 2: a private island day
Spend the day on the water. Farallón Island is a half-day of about 5 hours (from $500) that leaves the afternoon free; Otoque Island is a full day of about 8 hours with snorkeling and a village of colorful houses (from $750).
Day 3: El Valle de Antón, then home
Drive up to El Valle de Antón, a town inside the crater of an extinct volcano, about 45 minutes from the highway at Las Uvas. Hike to La India Dormida, look for the Piedra Pintada petroglyph, soak in the hot springs and, on a Sunday, browse the craft market with Ngäbe-Buglé crafts and Guna molas. El Valle is about 2.5 hours from Panama City, so it works on the way home.
Stretch it to 4 or 5 days
- Take a kite, surf or foil lesson at Punta Chame (best wind about January to May) or a beginner surf lesson at El Palmar.
- Spend a slow beach day at Taborcillo, the island once owned by John Wayne, about 9 hours (from $850).
- Hike to the lookout above La Laguna de San Carlos, more than 900 meters above sea level, or climb Cerro Chame for sunrise or sunset.
- In the green season, chase waterfalls: Las Filipinas in Altos del María and El Manglarito in Sora are at their strongest when it rains.
- Birdwatching tours and caiman spotting in the tropical dry forest near Coronado.
