Where to go

Things to do in San Carlos, Panama: surf beaches, a mountain lagoon and island days

San Carlos is a laid-back beach district on Panama's Riviera Pacífica, in Panamá Oeste, with more than ten beaches, beginner-friendly surf, a lagoon high in the hills and Vista Mar Marina, the home port of Strong Tower Adventures. It's quieter than Coronado next door and a natural base for a beach stay that includes a private boat day: from the marina, Farallón Island is about a 5-hour round trip, Otoque a full day, and the Sunset Cruise about three hours.

Getting to San Carlos

San Carlos lies along the Pan-American Highway west of Panama City, past Chame and Coronado; Vista Mar Marina is near kilometer 92 of the highway. Plan on about 1.5 hours or more by car, depending on traffic leaving the city. Buses from the Albrook terminal stop on the highway, with a taxi for the last stretch to the beach.

The whole Riviera Pacífica, from Chame to Farallón, runs along roughly 40 km of highway, so the other beach towns are an easy drive away. Scarlett Martínez International Airport in Río Hato is about 27 km from Vista Mar Marina; check current flight options before planning around it.

The beaches of San Carlos

  1. El Palmar: learn to surf

El Palmar is one of the best-known beginner surf beaches in Panama, with surf schools, board rentals, restaurants, bars, showers and lifeguards. Its breaks offer waves for different levels.

  2. La Ensenada: a calmer sea

La Ensenada is known for calmer water than the surf beaches, with a few local businesses, showers and bathrooms; the town nearby has the rest. Even here, conditions change: SINAPROC has raised the red flag at La Ensenada during strong swells.

  3. Playa Teta: natural and surfy

Playa Teta keeps a more natural feel, with two well-known surf points. There are kiosks and restaurants nearby, but it's best to bring what you need for the day.

  4. Río Mar: for experienced surfers

Río Mar, at the western end of the Riviera surf beaches, usually has bigger waves and can have strong currents, so it suits experienced surfers rather than swimmers.

Swim where lifeguards are on duty, follow the beach flags (red means no swimming) and keep a close eye on children.

Into the hills

  • La Laguna de San Carlos: a lagoon at more than 900 meters above sea level, about 90 minutes from Panama City. From the gate, a trail climbs Cerro Picacho in roughly 40 minutes to an hour, with a branch to a lookout over the lagoon. The path is narrow and humid, so wear proper shoes.
  • El Valle de Antón: a mountain town inside the crater of an extinct volcano, about 45 minutes' drive up from the highway at Las Uvas. Go on a Sunday for the craft market, hike La India Dormida, see the Piedra Pintada petroglyph and soak in the hot springs.
  • Waterfalls: in the green season, roughly May to November, the region's waterfalls are at their strongest.

Food and staying over

San Carlos mixes a relaxed beach community with restaurants, cafés, shops and places to stay close to the shore, from cabins and hostels to hotels and rental homes. Expect seaside staples like fried fish with patacones and ceviche. Places change, so check recent reviews before you go.

San Carlos with kids

  • Start with La Ensenada on a calm day, near a lifeguard.
  • Book a surf lesson at El Palmar for older kids and teens.
  • Try Vista Mar Tubing, $195/hour with one two-person tube, 2-hour minimum, close to the marina.
  • Spend a half-day at Farallón Island to snorkel with the family.

When to go

The dry season, roughly mid-December to April, is the classic beach season: sunny, breezy and busiest on weekends. The green season, roughly May to November, is greener and wetter, with a generally calmer Pacific that helps snorkeling. Humpback whales visit this coast from about July to October; see our islands guide for where to look.
